So, what now?

Good question. I’ve made inquiries, and everything is still very up-in-the-air as far as what’s going happen to VG. I didn’t want to jump the gun by creating this blog, but I also didn’t want to wait too long, in case we all scattered to the four corners of the internet (4chan, Reddit, YouTube, and Miley Cyrus’s Twitter). The only thing I can guarantee is that if we truly do end up having nowhere else to post and comment, this place will be here.

ETA: I won’t be posting over the weekend, because the weekend is for naps, but check back on Monday for new posts (and feel free to hang out in the comments whenever you want, of course.)

Let’s get the band back together! Has it been long enough yet?

My opinion is “go go go!” Don’t worry about what will happen to the videogum space. As a matter of fact, you should think about going beyond a “Videogum in exile”-type of thing. Come up with a cool-ass name for it and just Be the Blog You Want To See, together with your friends who just happen to have met on this other blog.

    • Yeah, I think that’s what’s going to end up happening, and that’s was I’m preparing for (and am excited about!). I’m definitely not married to this name, either, so we might have a naming contest as well as a custom header contest.

The way I see it is, if we try to keep Videogum TOS (the original site) going and people keep visiting, they’ll probably keep running ads, which means it’ll keep generating at least a tiny bit of revenue. Scott Lapatine seems like a great, well-meaning guy, but his corporate overlords did fire Kelly. I’d have a problem with helping those cats get fatter.

    • Yeah. And if were going to be doing something for free, I’d rather we be in full control of it, and doing it to make ourselves happy instead of to keep a certain amount of traffic coming to the site.

Totally agree. Much more fun to do it for the passion and for each other than for traffic. My guess is most if not all of us would agree.

Well, I certainly hope this is the right place. (Takes sip of soda, nods head in time to the music.) I’ll be he when things start up! (Pretends to receive text, looks at phone.)

I never commented on videogum and now I never can. I was a regular reader for the past …um… several years but always felt too shy to comment. Hopefully this shadow world will thrive.

I have a couple of other ideas for posts – Theresa, should we just email stuff to you as/when/if we write it? I’m going to see Beyonce in a couple of weeks and I really feel a review coming on…

    • I’ll be explaining all the options for contributing in a post tomorrow–that WILL be one option, but I’ll probably make anyone who contributes semi-regularly (so, less than once a week, but more than once every few months, maybe?) a Contributor, which means they can write the posts themselves on WordPress and then submit them to me for publishing. Basically, in my post on Monday, I’m going to ask everyone to tell me in the comments how often they think they’ll be able to contribute, so I can send them invites to become either an Author (can post things themselves–this will be for people who are going to post regularly) or Contributor. That way we can space out posts so there’s around the same number per day.

But yeah, no one will need to ask me or anyone else if they should write about a certain topic–if you want to, just write it and submit! And we will DEFINITELY need a Beyonce review.

  12. I talked with Scott on friday night via email and he said that VG will not be take down. They just can’t afford to pay anyone full time to write. He said they could def explore a fundraiser option OR volunteer contributors.
