Scary Movie Family Time! WoOooOooo!

You guys, it’s time to watch a scary movie!

Let the Right One In is a highly rated Swedish film defined as drama and horror. It gets 8 out of 10 stars on iMDB, a whopping 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a fabulous 4 3/4 stars on Netflix. Let’s watch!

I’m the kind of person who gets scared at scary movies she has seen dozens of times (i.e Alien, et.al. etc. ibid.) This movie will not doubt creep me the hell out. When I go through a haunted house, I hide behind whoever was silly enough to come with me and I have this look on my face the entire time:

I’m going to watch it next weekend (streaming on Netflix I heart Netflix) with an open thread, so we can view a spoopy film as a family. I can do Friday October 10, Saturday the 11th, or Sunday the 12th. Early evenings would be best so I can put food in my face while I watch. Let me know in the comments if you have a preference for one of these days!

However, if you can’t watch then, don’t worry! You can watch it on your own until Wednesday, October 22, when I’ll have a recap written. Scary recap I CAN’T WAIT!!

Any questions? Concerns? Let me know in the comments. Good scary movie food (besides pizza obvs)? Scary cupcake recipes? Scary creme brulee? Scary cappuccino?

We all need to put scary food on our families, it’s a constitutional right, I’m pretty sure.

  1. I’m psyched to watch this again! And the 10th or 12th would be the best day for me, because I actually have plans on Saturday like some kind of real person.

I’ve only seen the remake, and I am def down to watch the orig (I’m big into abbrevs today). I’m still out of town all of those days, though, so I’m watching on my own 😦

    Scary food:
boo-rek (if you don’t already eat burek, you need to get on my level)
pumpkin anything, but carve the pumpkin into a jack o lantern after you’ve scooped the meaty innards for your delicious soups/pies/bakes
peeled grapes and cold spaghetti I MEAN EYEBALLS AND BRAINS
gingerbread men, but with limbs missing or the icing done to look like a skeleton
    lots of candy
a cheese ball, but maybe a haunted one?

      Blood sausage
      Blood oranges

I went on a brewery tour last night, and the owner said that for the fall, they’re doing a fig-based beer, mainly because everyone there hates pumpkin. I immediately left the tour.

      • old man fatima says:

Mmm, figs would be so good though. But, yeah, you made the right choice.

I know I can’t be the only person whose love for pumpkin beers has cooled over the years, can I? I have had so many more gross pumpkin beers than good ones that it’s getting kind of exhausting to try to pick through each year’s new batch. Also, 6 pumpkin beers is too many for drinking; I’m usually done after one (or half of one). I assume the same would hold true for fig beer, but at least it’s a flavor that hasn’t been done to death yet.

That said, come on brewery! Even if you do hate pumpkin, don’t alienate your pumpkin-loving clientele like that!!!

        • I’ve never “loved” pumpkin beer but will always have at least one a season. Seasonal novelty things are not things I consume in great amounts. Except Revolution Rosa, oh man that stuff is good (but also not novelty).

        • FRQ says:

Had he given a rational explanation about how the market is saturated with pumpkin beers and they wanted to do something different, that would have been fine. But he said “we hate pumpkin”, those words exactly. You can take your figs and SHOVE IT. (Note: I think figs are fine)

          “we hate pumpkin”

          Those words do not compute.

        • kesher says:

A good pumpkin beer/ale for me can’t have too much pumpkin or too much spice, and it seems like most have one or the other. The only one I know is consistently good is Dogfish.

  3. This sounds great! I could prolly do any of those days.

  4. flanny says:

Ooh, that’s Homecoming weekend at work (Go Comets!), but I should be able to watch on Sunday. Don’t plan around me, though, because I am 95% sure I’ll chicken out.

    • taoreader says:

We’ll have an open thread to keep you company. But if you chicken out, don’t worry, that’s what recaps are for!

  5. Sota says:

I am way to scared to watch this movie, but I fully support the family movie plan. Maybe ill watch Monsters Inc (my level of scary) at the same time as you all watch this and just make comments to myself so I can feel included.

  6. superiorglue says:

I will not be watching this for wimpiness reasons, but I will be cheering everyone on!

RAH RAH RAH! WATCH THAT MOVIE! TRY NOT TO BARF! HOPE YOU SLEEP TONIGHT! SIS BOOM BAH!

  7. I love this movie! It’s not super scary except in a few moments. As a girl who can barely tolerate any kind of scary movie, I can say that I survived this. You guys can do it!

    Also, I vote the 12!

  8. taoreader says:

Looks like Sunday Oct. 12 will be family viewing day. I’ll post an update later with exact date and time and some scary recipe ideas!
