What Did Your Secret Santa Get You??

Christmas has come and gone, and hopefully, we’ve all received out Secret Santa gifts (if anyone was running behind on mailing them out, don’t feel bad! Your person will just get an extra, post-Christmas surprise). So, what did you get? Who was your Santa?

Mine was the estimable artdork, and she is a Secret Santa WIZARD, because she gave me something I’d been wanting since it first came out:

Helen Anne Petersen’s Scandals of Classic Hollywood, which is a GREAT read (I binged on it all holiday weekend), so I definitely recommend it if the subject matter interests you. If you thought modern tabloids and gossip blogs were bad, hoo boy. They are paragons of morality and discretion compared to the rags of yore.

Thank you, artdork! I loved it (and so did my mom, who stole it from me and read it before I had the chance the day after I showed it to her).

Mine was the perfect, perfect mikalajm who sent me Doctor Who cookie cutters (which I SADLY have not had a chance to use yet), and made me a 60 minute YouTube playlist of different covers of All I Want for Christmas is You. If I was not laid up with illness, I would have used them to make a gingerbread TARDIS for the lawn of the gingerbread house that I also didn’t make. I got my roommate tattoo cookie cutters, so I see A LOT of cookies in this house’s future.

Mine just arrived today! I got season 2 of The OC and a giant wine glass full of chocolate so clearly somebody knows me very well. But I don’t know who, because there was no note! Reveal yourself, champion gift-giver!

    • Commentatrix says:

It was meeee! I was in such a rush to get the damn thing in the mail that I forgot to put in a card! Glad it got there in one piece. (I was worried the chocolate might break the glass en route.)

      • catweazle says:

It is a very good gift combo because a drinking from a wine glass that can hold an entire bottle of wine will help me to identify with (spoiler) Kirsten’s emerging alcoholism!

I’m so glad you (and your mom!) liked it! I was sooo worried that you already had it, but I took the risk!

Someone (I’m pretty sure it was our lovely Truck) got me this amazing art deco fan-like necklace with a lovely pair of earrings. I have already worn them out on the town several times!

  4. I got another present today! I just found out I’m going to be an aunt! Brother #2 (older than me, but not the oldest) and his wife are going to have a baby!

The lovely Kate got me a custom made pillow with my face on it as a… dalek, is it? Sorry, I don’t know anything Dr. Who! But basically she took some Twitter artwork made by catweazle (back when I was trying to tweet regularly) and put it on a pillow! The only flaw in Kate’s plan is that she probably didn’t realize my dog would try to steal my gift.

I received a pair of excellent gifts from taoreader in the form of a variety box of what I assume are gourmet cookies, and a picture frame designed to look like a printed circuit board. She was also gracious enough to replace whatever random family came with the frame with a Team Coco picture.

    • taoreader says:

I forgot I put the shortbread cookies in there! They are made from scratch by the talented and handy Mr. Tao. Yes, he did all the wrapping and labels himself, because that’s the kind of thing he does.

I already told about my perfect gift from Theresa which was the art pen set and yummy chocolate bars. Now that I’ve survived Christmas, I will have a chance to use my new pens! (Chocolate is all gone, of course…)

I received from FRQ some interesting Christmas music by a band called A Sunny Day in Glasgow (who are of course from Philadelphia). It’s a little cassette EP of 5 or 6 songs, with an equal proportion of songs by Mariah Carey and Ralph “Rafe” Vaughan Williams plus some originals..

Who’s totally out of touch with current indie music and has two thumbs? You were right! It’s me! The album is pretty good (and my car still has a cassette player)!

It’s kind of shoegazery Christmas pop–see: https://soundcloud.com/geonorth/a-sunny-day-in-glasgow-shut-your-mouth-its-christmas/ for a sample.

Martinmegs got me a melange of fun, including notebooks that make me feel like I should start keeping a journal again and stickers. The centerpiece is a beat up paperback (perfect) of the book that Die Hard 2 is based on. I love this and it prompted me to finally read the book that Die Hard 1 is based on, which Martinmegs told me was a thing I believe in the comment thread at Kelly’s perfect review of that movie back in olden times. And I love this book. Thank you, Martinmegs!!!!! Ho Ho ho!

    • old man fatima says:

I must not have read that review’s comments thoroughly enough because I did not know that those movies were based on books! My mind is expandiiiiing…

    • martinmegz says:

The Die Hard 1 book (Nothing Lasts Forever) is so good! But you said awhile ago that you had downloaded it so I sent you the Die Hard 2 source novel. I was very upset that the seller put a sticker on the front cover of the book and gave them a bad Amazon rating as a result.

Neverabadidea sent me four perfect movies. You know they are perfect because Space Jam is one of them! Also included is a CD of live tapings of Japanese-style monster wrestling, The Secret of NIMH, and Easy A, which I have never seen!

  11. I’m late to the party, but Sota got me a smorgaasbord of awesome which included some sunglasses paperclips (which I have at my desk at work already!), some creepy pens so others won’t steal them, a notepad, and lots of candy (not pictured, due to early eating). She even included a gift for Tykeasaurus!!!! It was a Christmas counting board book!!!! It was all really great and I loved it and this was the greatest thing ever!!!

I’m just seeing this thread because I was sick yesterday. Mordonez sent me a picture of my favorite person in the whole world, Eddie Vedder, the great love of my life. Thank you!!! I’m going to try to post a photo but I never know which format to use to show up in comments. Fingers crossed.

Ahhhh!!! I am super late to this thread because I’ve been travelling and I only just received my gift as a result, but it is an amazing custom-made pillow, from hotspur, with TONS of fun HM graphics, including many images of things I have confessed to loving! Every time I look at it I see something I missed before! It’s amazing and I will post a picture in a different thread when I am back home again and can take a good one.

    • hotspur says:

Huzzah! I hope It helps you do stuff, like watch TV and rest. I tried to include things you have commented on positively — I feel like I got to know you better by doing it, and it was fun to make. Happy new year, mikaelajm.
