Yesterday Was A Fast News Day

You know, the opposite of a slow news day?

Anyway, while I was busy makin dem billz, my twitter feed was blowing up about assorted things.

First of all, these llamas were chased around for a while I guess. I don’t know, I was in a meeting!

Almost 19 minutes? My goodness! I don’t spend 19 minutes on any animals except for the Puppy Cam.

And then, of course, #thedress.

What colors is it, though? Some say blue and black! Some say white and gold! I actually say both, since the first time I looked it was white and gold and then blue and black a little later. I was basically out of the loop of social media starting around 7:30pm Eastern. I left work at 9pm Eastern, and I talked to my mom on the phone and then checked my social media, and my feeds all over were positively LIVID (also means “dark bluish gray”) over the dress. It was trending everywhere. And now it’s a little before 11pm, and things are starting to turn from incredulity to anger. EVERYONE CALM DOWN! I can’t wait to see what everyone thinks in the morning!

It feels very much like the time when I went on study abroad for six measly months (in Europe, excuse me, I’m very fancy), and when I returned home I found out from Us Magazine that I was supposed to care about the wedding of Trista and Ryan, and I had completely missed the emergence of Paris Hilton as a cultural icon! It was like I returned to a different country entirely! I was not a European, not an American. Not a girl, not yet a woman. I was scared and alone and I didn’t understand anything anyone was talking about for a number of weeks!

But now no one knows who Trista and Ryan are, and Paris Hilton is just sort of a snooze, so I think I just have to wait this out. Soon enough (maybe even in the morning) no one’s going to care about the llamas or the dress. I just need to not talk to anyone until that moment. I’m going to sit here on my sofa and watch Titanic on AMC. It’s my safe place.

About flanny

Flanny was born and raised in a Detroit suburb, but tells people she's from Detroit without clarification because it makes her sound tough. She is not tough. Her favorite member of One Direction is Louis Tomlinson, and her favorite Agatha Christie detectives are Tommy and Tuppence.

Oh man, flanny SAME HERE ON THE DRESS. When I first saw it I was 100% FORE SURE that it was white and gold. And then it changed to black and blue!!! And then back again??? UGH I DON’T KNOW.

Guys, I sleep with NPR on in the background, and this morning I half woke up around 6:15 and I swear I heard a news story about the dress. And now I just woke up (luxury) and I turned on the tv and Titanic is on AMC again! Is this my groundhog day???

A bunch of you supposedly scored well on this color test, so I expect some brilliant insights from you people on that dress. I’ve looked at that thing and I have never seen it as anything other than white and gold (maybe bluish white, but still).

So when I got home last night, I was on buzzfeed (yes, I know). At first, the dress was white and gold then as I scrolled through the article which featured the dress as it appears on the store’s website, I scrolled back up and it was there in all it’s blue and black glory. Not only that, but all the pics accompanying the multiple stories on it had changed colors as well. Then I left buzzfeed, went back, and all the pics looked white and gold again. So I can’t help you, I guess is what I’m saying.

    • I have only ever seen it as very clearly blue and black–and not even light blue, more of a medium shade. I guess I have good color receptors? Which I suppose is nice, since my eyes are pretty useless otherwise.

      • FRQ says:

Supposedly this is another image of the dress. I can totally buy that the dress is actually black and blue and the image above was oddly lit, but I cannot for the life of me understand how people can look at these two pictures and see the same thing.

        • I don’t see the same thing–the original image is definitely washed out. But it’s still blue and black 😉

        • FRQ says:

Yeah, let’s just all agree that the actual IRL dress is black and blue and call it a day. Beyond that it’s just an incredible waste of time, even by internet standards.

I will also completely agree that this is why getting people’s opinion on clothes via images from mobile phones is a bad idea. I’ve considered getting my friends’ opinions on clothing while shopping alone. I’ll look at the picture on my phone, then back at the shirt, and think “this isn’t going to work”.

      Same here.

I saw it as blue/dark gray the first several times I looked at it. Then, shortly before I went to bed last night, I suddenly saw it as white/gold. I took that as a sign I really needed to go to bed.

I just could not care less about this stupid dress. It’s white and gold duh. But this was my favorite social media response I saw to it…

  6. Ha, I love that Adobe weighed in:

  7. Sota says:

Also Flaniel…did you see earlier this week the post by Buzzfeed (sorry ugh) about Titanic? JACK DAWSON TIME TRAVELER????

  8. catweazle says:

Are the white and gold people trolling? Like seriously, are they? I hate that this dress thing is a thing because it seems so stupid and it makes me feel like I’m taking crazy pills. I mean, it’s obviously more blue and brown than blue and black in the picture but you’d have to be high or blind to see white anywhere in there.

Like your trip to Europe, I went without internet for a year and during that time, Twitter happened. When I finally got reconnected, I was like, “Hey, have you guys heard that there’s this thing called Twitter now? What’s that all about?” and got looks of wonderment in return, like, what desert island have you been stranded on? But for me it was like an episode of the Twilight Zone come to life.

The dress is white and gold. There are four lights!
