The headline pretty much speaks for itself: This Man Lives Alone In A Radioactive Town To Care For The Abandoned Animals.
“I had no choice but to stay,” Matsumura told Vice. “I couldn’t leave the animals behind. They needed to be fed.”
The 55-year-old told the BBC that he is aware he is constantly being exposed to radiation, but isn’t concerned, though he does only consume food grown outside Tomoika.
“They told me that I wouldn’t get sick for 30 or 40 years,” he said, “I’ll most likely be dead by then anyway, so I couldn’t care less.”
There are many more wonderful pictures of Matsumura living the dream (I mean, not to downplay the sacrifices he’s made, but he has a point re: the radiation poisoning. It might be worth it to get cancer in 30-40 years if it meant you got to spend those years living in an animal paradise, because let’s face it, a lot of us will get cancer anyway) at the link.
