Monster Community Pool – 5/28/2015

Clouds be damned, I’m going to take a dip.

I had mentioned this in another post, but I wanted to ask everyone if it was alright if I tinker with some of the posts you guys create?  I think it’s nice to have posts look a certain way, and I’d like to tweak things here and there.  I don’t want to force anyone to adhere to a standard, so I would be doing all of the work.

I am trying to decide if Billboardgate is a scandal I would ever have cared about. I think it is weirder that “Fancy” is not considered a Charli XCX song? The word “fancy” is in the part she sings and I think whoever says the title owns the song. (It is unclear why I am not the King of Songs and therefore able to issue the official ruling.)

I also wonder what FRQ has in store if we let him monkey with our posts. I might actually post next week, so maybe we will see. If we don’t like how he makes us look, we can always throw him in an e-pit and fire up an iPendulum.

I love that the name of those wasps was legitimately named after Harry Potter. Nerds!

That poor kid. Reminds me of the kid who (actually really!) looks like Benedict Cumberbatch. His pics were posted all over tumblr and pinterest. I’m sure he gets all the ladies.

I just realized that today is not Friday. Such a disappointment. That is what happens when its a weird holiday week and you find that you have gone out to Happy hour 3 days in a row.

So this is totally random but, I know some of you are Terry Pratchett fans/afficionados (Pratchett-heads?) and I’ve only ever read Mort which I really enjoyed. And I just downloaded Small Gods. But where should I go from here??? There are just so many. Should I just go in publication order?

I went in publication order because I’m a dork, and I think that’s a good way to go until you figure out whose stories you like best. I love the City Watch stuff, so that’s fun to read in a chunk. The Witches stuff works in a chunk too. Scandalously, I’m not super into Rincewind, but I love Ridicully and the UU in general.

For me, the last two books aren’t quite up to his usual, but with everything he was going through, I’m not surprised.

I remember liking Reaper Man quite a bit, and it’s the next one after Mort to feature Death as a main character. Guards! Guards! was the first of the City Watch stories and was a good introduction to those guys. Probably not the best of the City Watch but essential for further reading, I’d say. I wasn’t too impressed by the first two Witches stories (Equal Rites and Wyrd Sisters) but started enjoying them a lot more with Witches Abroad and Lords and Ladies. One of my favourites was Thief of Time, which I think you could just jump ahead and read since it’s pretty self-contained from what I remember. I really like the first two as well (The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic) but that seems to be the minority opinion around here. They’re much more interested in spoofing fantasy tropes than later books, and they both feature Rincewind. But other than those two books, the Rincewind stuff is pretty inessential.

I read them all in pretty close to publication order though, with a few minor deviations, and if you’re really into it, that’s probably the best way to go. Artdorkgirl is right that the last two don’t quite live up to the standards set by the rest of the series, but it’ll probably take you a while to get there anyway.

I’d only add to say you might want to read Hogfather then Thief of Time, just because of Susan’s role in both. Love Lords and Ladies though. I always hoped we’d get one more Witch book. sigh…

Hogfather’s really good too. Yeah, it took me a while to warm up to her, but Granny Weatherwax turned out to be one of my favourite characters.
