Monster Mix Results

This was a pure and utter delight. Thank you to everyone who participated and everyone who was enthusiastic. We’ve got a pretty good mix here, with some hella jams, although I think we can all agree that probably all of us were mildly angsty teens who spent muggy summer night with our friends in the woods, drinking warm beer and feeling alienated. “Are these people really my friends? The only thing that understands me is music. I feel like I’m suffocating in all this humidity, and from my parents’ expectations. I’m just like these fireflies, but have I missed my moment of glowing?” Teen Summer Us is the worst and yet, so perfect. But seriously, j’adore this mix. Let’s jam out!

  1. Summer People — The Webb Brothers
  2. A Roller Skating Jam Named “Saturdays” — De La Soul
  3. I Love It — Icona Pop (ft. Charlie XCX)
  4. The World You Love — Jimmy Eat World
  5. Sister Havana — Urge Overkill
  6. Lean On — Major Lazer & DJ Snake (ft. MO)
  7. Hey Ya! — Outkast
  8. Lightning Bolt — Pearl Jam
  9. Cycling is Fun — Shonen Knife
  10. Folding Chair — Regina Spektor
  11. I Should’ve Been After You — Rooney
  12. Held — Smog
  13. A Little Respect — Erasure
  14. I Summon You — Spoon
  15. Summer Skin — Teen Girl Scientist Monthly
  16. Annie — Neon Indian
  17. Heavy metal drummer — Wilco
  18. Narcotic — Liquido
  19. Gold Soundz — Pavement
  20. Saints — The Breeders

This mix had 11 contributors, and there’s two songs from everyone except for Sota and Truckasaurus, who both sent in one song each. Here are the rest of the contributors:
Duc Spidermonk, wot?
Flanny (that’s me)

And finally a couple of deep cuts that didn’t make the CD because of a lack of room.
Artdorkgirl: Diplomat’s Son — Vampire Weekend
Casey: Magic — The Cars
Catweazle: Des Larmes — Emilie Simon
Duc Spidermonk, Wot?: Eloise and I — Men Without Hats
Flanny: Open Road Song — Eve 6, No Scrubs — TLC
FRQ: Postinjonen — Wait
Hotspur: Atlantic City — Bruce Springsteen
Martinmegz: Getaway or You — Pearl Jam, Steal my Kisses — Ben Harper

People had some really great memories that they shared in their emails to me about what these songs meant or how they related to specific times in their lives, so feel free to discuss your picks in the comments. But first, let’s all speculate over who picked what!

About flanny

Flanny was born and raised in a Detroit suburb, but tells people she's from Detroit without clarification because it makes her sound tough. She is not tough. Her favorite member of One Direction is Louis Tomlinson, and her favorite Agatha Christie detectives are Tommy and Tuppence.

I’m really bad at the guessing game, but I will tip my hat to the person that added the Erasure song.

Also, I totally missed the part about including a story of why I selected my songs. However, my reasoning is simple: I just like a good dance jam. That should narrow down the selections of what songs I chose.

Ooooh, Erasure was me, and it was a last-minute switch! In middle school my mom used to leave me home alone when she went to work in the summer and I remember pretending I was in a music video to that song and lip-synching along to it, specifically while standing on a particular ottoman.

  2. artdorkgirl says:

My picks basically remind me of warm weather and hanging out outside. Except for Sister Havana, which reminds me of the summer I recorded 120 minutes every Sunday and stayed up super late every night listening to this alternative radio station that played from Midnight to 5:00 am.

    Good choices all around though!

I want to clarify that I’ve never been able to find the right version of Narcotic on Spotify or Amazon. (I didn’t try iTunes.) I got it on a mix CD from a friend that has since disappeared, but I listened to it basically that whole summer. All I can find is club remixes. So here’s the version I like and that I included on the CD.

  4. catweazle says:

I chose one of my songs because it had the word “summer” in the title and the other because it’s a good summer driving song.

I don’t have any good guesses right now, but I want to applaud the Monsters’ excellent taste! This is a fabulous mix.

  6. Sota says:

I am glad that no one chose Monster Mash as their Monster Mix song. That would have been too much.

  7. Kate says:

I made a spotify playlist of these songs called Summer Monsters. I believe I have successfully tweeted it @originalkate.

Here’s the memory attached to my not-included song, Atlantic City: When I lived in Belmar, NJ, every Monday the town emptied out as all the weekend renters left, and me and two friends went to this place called Jack’s Tavern. There was a local guy there who got the house gig for Mondays, and it was just him and his acoustic guitar in a mostly empty bar. In the beginning of the summer he was nervous and terrible, but 6-8 Mondays later he had gotten really pretty good. He played this song every time and I always looked forward to it.

I got my mix on Saturday and it’s been on a loop in my car (the only place I still have a cd player) ever since. My drives were made infinitely more jaunty by it. Thanks for doing this flanny! And thanks for the stickers! P.S. I also sent in a single song.

  10. I picked one song because it’s the perfect song and belongs on every single mix ever (also I told you guys I was gonna pick it). The other one I picked because on the surface it seems like a very peppy summer song about sunshine, but if you listen to all the words it’s about not knowing if you fit in and kind of feeling miserable but pretending to be happy anyway because you want to be happy, which is exactly like summer for me: being pretty miserable (hot), but feeling like you need to pretend to love it cause that’s just what you do (really? We’re gonna sit on the patio in July? It’s hot guys.) but also in an angsty Teen Summer Us way.

  11. Duc Spidermonk, wot? says:

Thanks for doing this. I should have let you send me a copy of the CD because downloading them all myself was a pain. But it was worth it because they’re all great summer songs. The only song I didn’t have to download (aside from the ones I contributed) was the Erasure one, because I already had it, because it’s Awesome.

  12. martinmegz says:

Who submitted that awesome Pearl Jam song?????? I couldn’t even choose which one to send so I sent three options

Thanks again for doing this (and for humoring my indecision), I’m enjoying the hell out of listening to this at work right now.

  13. Casey says:

i got my CD last night and blasted it on the way to work this morning. So great! Awesome choices all the way through, monsters! It will live in my car all summer. Thanks so much, Flanny, for pulling this all together.

  14. Casey says:

As for guesses, I would have a hard time, but something tells me Urge Overkill and Shonen Knife were from catweazle?
