So for those of you who are not familiar, David Rees is a fine fellow who used to draw (?) the clip-arty “Get your War On” cartoon, and who then moved on to a business (?) based on his fine book How to Sharpen Pencils. You can totally send him some pencils (#2 only) and he will sharpen them for you, for a fee, and return them along with the shavings.
It is simultaneously DEADLY SERIOUS and VERY SILLY, which to me is among the winningest of combinations.
Anyway, last year he launched “Going Deep with David Rees” on the Nat Geo channel (here is a sort of representative clip from season 1).
Sadly the dummos at Nat Geo did not renew the program, so it has migrated over to the Esquire channel, and has its season premiere on November 11. Here is the new trailer.
Mr. Rees is doing an “analog” promo tour for this thing, driving across the country in a van with a bunch of flyers, having meetups to post them around various cities, and doing somewhat awkward segments with super happy morning TV hosts.
So the thing about these flyers, which you can find here, is that they have a phone number on them. I know it says “call David on his phone), but I was certain that I’d get a recording. Incorrect! I called the number, and to my amazement, David answered!
It was fantastic! I expressed my surprise, and he happened to have a free moment, so I told him how great I thought the show was, and when he asked where I was calling from, he told me “Oh, my brother just moved there [to my suburb] and he was sad that we couldn’t make it to Chicago on the tour”.
So my new task, assigned by David Rees, is to put up a bunch of flyers around town so his brother thinks that they DID come to town without telling him. I tried to find out the brother’s favorite coffee shop, for premium gaslighting potential, but David didn’t know.
So anyway, watch this show, if you like that sort of thing. I know I will.
