Tuesday TV Talk

A couple of weeks ago, AMC started up one of my favorite shows for its final season.  Halt and Catch Fire was given a fourth season to wrap up its mostly excellent run.  It airs Saturdays at 9pm EST.  It’s sad to see it relegated to such a shitty time slot, but I guess I should be grateful this season even exists.

Thanks to Theresa I was able to sneakily watch the GoT finale last night, thank goodness! It was… fine. Nothing happened that I wasn’t already 100% expecting to happen and I want to throttle Bran for not understanding the concept of urgency, but whatevs. Looking forward to the last season so I can finally find out how this shit ends!

Project Runway: DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON THE BALD TWIN. Again, I have no clear favorite in this season. I thought the safe team was very creative using the plastic can rings they way they did and I wish the judges had acknowledged that. And I know the judges went crazy about the braiding detail on that one press in the losing, and correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems to me that during every unconventional materials challenge someone tries to braid or weave an outfit out of something. It still looked to me like wadded up plastic bags. The weaving didn’t even really give the model full coverage, so I was confused.

    • Indeed. The twins are cultivating their personalities for reality television, which results in them coming off as contrived. I’m convinced neither of them will go home until we have a dramatic moment with them in the bottom two together.

The braid dress designer is a friend of a friend, so I’ve been pulling for her. Plus she had to deal with the twins so she gets some sympathy points from me. (Fact: Anyone that wears a sweater that says “Millennial AF” sucks)

I like her generally. I was just confused that everyone on earth but me seemed to forget that people are constantly braiding during these challenges. Why am I the one cursed with this knowledge?????

  3. I need to hijack this thread to say that I’m sick to my stomach with nerves about my root canal in a few hours. I know this is a routine procedure but it’s not routine for me! A root canal used to be the standard reference for extreme pain. I’m told things have progressed a lot since then and now it’s not actually excruciating? But really it’s the expense that has me sick. This is the biggest one-time expense I’ve ever had aside from buying a car or renting an apartment. I was fortunate to be able to borrow the money interest-free but I’ll be making payments for at least a year. My monthly tooth payments.

    • hotspur says:

I’ve had three root canals plus one tooth surgery and never felt a thing. The doc’ll numb that mouth right up. You’ll be aces.

I hear you on the expense though. I’m on a payment plan for my last one. It’s one thing to spend a bunch of money to do something fun, like fly to Europe for a week. It’s very different to spend nearly that same amount of money on a flippin’ TOOTH.

    • mordonez says:

I’m here to echo that same sentiment, With a good oral surgeon, you will not be in pain. I recently had a root canal/crown, and it was no big deal–didn’t feel a thing.

HOWEVER, it did come with a free wallet-ectomy. Originally, my dentist was going to remove the tooth (cheap ish) and then do an implant next year (slightly more expensive than a crown), but then they said “you know, I think we can save this tooth, let’s do that”. So it’s fixed, but the downside is that the implant would have been paid for with NEXT YEAR’s tax-free flex spending money. As opposed to most of my available cash, which is what happened with the crown.

I’ve had an embarrassing number of root canals and it’s really not so bad! It’s just a little boring to sit there with your mouth wide open for so long listening to the hits of the 80s, 90s and today (I’m assuming all dentists use the same radio station). The only bad thing that ever happened when I had one was the time that I got a root canal and like three fillings all in one sitting and my mouth was like “fuck you”‘ and I developed an ulcer on my gums but they just cauterized it and send me home with some vicodin and it was fine.

    • Thanks, guys. I survived and it’s true that it wasn’t painful, but it was pretty traumatic. They ended up not being able to save the crown so now I have to borrow an additional $1300 and basically I’m just sitting at my desk crying and wondering where I can get a job that will provide good dental insurance.

      • actionjackson5 says:

Ouch. The financial kick is definitely the worst. I have good dental insurance, but that means I have to make one big painful payment I can barely sway instead of being financially wiped out. Dentists seem to have the most hi-tech 21st century equipment, but when it’s time to check out and they hand you a bill and you ask about a payment plan, it’s like those words don’t exist in the English language. “Pay-ment. Plan?”

Big Brother has turned into a real shitshow. I can’t believe CBS is letting this shit happen! These people are crazy!

    • Do you know the half of it???? I don’t watch feeds but I follow along on reddit so I see the clips of the fights that don’t make it on the air. These people are giving the BB15 racists a run for their money.
