Tuesday TV Talk

Our first TV Talk of the year!  I actually have TV watching to report on this time, since the break has given me some time to grab some viewing time here and there.

First is Jean Claude Van Johnson, which is a (presumably) fictitious look into the real life of Jean Claude Van Damme.  The premise is that his movie career is just a cover for a life of espionage.  It’s completely ridiculous from beginning to end, but if you appreciate the shittiness of 80s and 90s action movies, you will enjoy this.  It also does a surprisingly decent job with callbacks.  On a side note, I love how short these new Amazon series are being kept.  JCVJ is only 6 episodes, as is the other new Amazon show, The Tick.  I Love Dick is slightly longer at 8, but it’s still only half an hour.  Perfect if you want to squeeze in a new series.

I also started watching the latest season of The Great British Bake Off, which features two new hosts (Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding) and a new judge (Prue Leith).  While it took some getting used to, I feel like the new show is just as good with the cast change.  Sandi and Noel needed a few episodes to straighten things out, but 6 episodes in they seemed to have gotten the hang of it.  Noel’s shirt game is on point.

I started watching Halt and Catch Fire. I don’t love it, but I’m already into season 3, so I guess I like it enough to binge watch it pretty quickly.

I have only seen the first half of the Golden Globes, and thanks to my 7 day free trial of YouTube TV, I recorded it to watch sometime in the next few days.

My coworker told me that America’s Next Top Model is coming back this week – WITH TYRA!

I would love to say that I have the self control to not waste my time watching it, but who am I kidding? Of course I’m going to watch it.

I watched the pilot of Fresh Off The Boat on a whim the other day and it was funny! I will keep watching it at some point.

I’ve seen a lot of shows I liked in the past month. I think I’ve mentioned them here: Manhunt, Mindhunter, Hunted (sense a theme?), Travelers season 2, and Ryan Hansen Solves Crime on Television. This week I’ve been watching Nikita because when it originally came out, I was too bitter with the memories of La Femme Nikita show starring Peta Wilson, but now those memories have faded so I’m enjoying this version.

Who’s watching the Bachelor? There was a woman last night crying about having to do a demolition derby because one time as a child her bumper car got stuck and people kept bumping her, and it was a traumatic memory. The show did a dramatic re-enactment that should earn it an Emmy, I laughed so hard.

What are you watching GBBO on?

Amazing Race is back!! I’m liking it a lot. This season’s gimmick isn’t too gimmicky, so it isn’t distracting from the race itself.

I welcomed Good Place back into my life with open arms and I literally applauded when Derreck showed up again. Guys, I don’t want to ever hear anything bad about the Good Place because it brings me so much joy. And the woman who plays Janet is a real-life adult fan of One Direction. YEAH, SUCK IT HATERS! Your nerdy TV crush loves One Direction, LIKE ALL COOL PEOPLE SHOULD.

With almost NO hype, The X-Files returned last Wednesday! I missed it, of course, but I’ll watch it on-demand tonight before the second episode (also tonight).

I’m also working my way through the extras disc in the new Twin Peaks Blu-Ray set. It’s so good, showing Lynch explain to the actors what they are doing and feeling and what they’ll be seeing once the effects are added.

I agree, had it not been for football I would have not known about the return of the X-Files. That being said, I saw the first episode and it was pretty terrible. I like how they’re trying to course correct the My Struggle arc from last season, but literally everything else about the episode sucked. That being said, the show has always been more about the monster of the week episodes, so I’ll keep watching and hope for the best.

Ha! Well, I said I was going to watch it, but I forgot again. And I forgot to record it. Maybe this season isn’t in the cards for me.
