Valentine’s Day Nightmare Post

Hello everyone. Could you smell something in the air this morning? It was LOVE, I think. Or it could have been commercialism, I’m not sure, and the good thing is, I’m definitely not bitter.

Because I’m sick of the marketing emails and posts like “OMG we must be meant to be together because we bought each other the same card”, here’s an open thread for you to write the thing you love the most/hate the most/just something you want to share about 14th February.

I’ll start with a positive and a negative:

1) would whoever sent me that anonymous rose when I was 21 please confess now? I am bored of wondering about the love that we could have shared.

2) a couple of years ago, an old school friend got in touch via Facebook, as old school friends are wont to do. We had got on well so I wasn’t suspicious at all about his motives when he suggested going for a drink. For some dumb reason, the fact that he asked me to go on 14th February didn’t register. Cue one of the most awkward nights of my life, in a restaurant filled with couples, with a man who clearly had a very different idea of what the evening was going to hold to the one I did.

We haven’t spoken since.

Yesterday I went over to my sister’s after work to hang out with her and the baby and I learned the following things:

    a) Valentine’s Day is baby’s favorite holiday.
    b) His speech is progressing so now instead of saying “Aunt Claire” as “Ah Cah” he says “Ah Key-ohr” and it’s fucking adorable.
    c) Earlier in the day he apparently said to my sister “I like Aunt Claire. Aunt Claire loves me!” Now I am a dead Valentine’s Day ghost.

I’ve always liked Valentine’s Day possibly because I’ve never really had any expectation of romance associated with it. But here is an embarrassing V-Day story:

I’ve probably mentioned before that for one semester in college the actor Joseph Cross (AKA the kid from Jack Frost) lived down the hall from me in my dorm and he was in the movie Running With Scissors that year so I was a little starstruck and scared to talk to him because I am a huge nerd. I was friends with mostly everybody on the floor that year and I had these heart-shaped post-it notes that I used just for normal stuff and I decided it would be fun if I put one on everybody’s door for Valentine’s Day with a little message. Later that day I was coming back from the dining hall where among other things I had eaten a fancy Valentine’s Day cupcake and I ended up in the elevator with Mr. Movie Star and he was like “Oh hey were you the one who put the hearts on everybody’s door?” and I was like “Yeah” but was too shy to say anything else and then I went back to my room and saw I had a glob of chocolate frosting on my face. Somehow he and I never became BFFs.

      I ❤ this story. Perfect.

My little nephew is picking some really interesting words to start his life as a speaker – not mummy, not daddy, not even his brother's name – no, the first things he said were "dinosaur" (pronounced "di-door") and "FIRE". Good kid.

Once when my nice was little, she said to her mom, “Aunt Amy is cool!” Which is the only time anyone has ever used that adjective to describe me.

My weirdest VD was when Pat was in his family practice residency and the whole department went out for dinner together. A few days later I went into labor and the residency director delivered Kelly. It’s odd to have a friend deliver your baby.

Hi Everyone, if you don’t want to celebrate Valentine’s Day today (for any number of reasons), you could instead celebrate my birthday as it’s also today. For gif suggestions, let’s go with 30 Rock, Bojack Horseman, kitties fitting into things, or kitties being snuggly.

  6. I’m grateful for Valentine’s Day in a general sense because it’s part of the reason I exist (my birthday is November 13th. You do the math), but otherwise, eh. I’ve never had an especially good OR bad one.

I’m just going to leave these right here…

Hmmm. The picture didn’t show up. It’s Law & Order Valentine’s Day Cards. 🙂

  8. I’m a little late, but I just want to say that February 14th is also Arizona Statehood Day. Part of the reason we never get off work for our statehood day is because people got grumpy about why people were getting “Valentine’s Day” off. 😦 But, aside from that complaint about it, I often just tell people that I’m celebrating Arizona Statehood Day instead of Valentine’s Day (because I never have a date on Valentine’s Day) or Singles Awareness Day (which sounds too pessimistic). If I ever find someone who appreciates Arizona Statehood Day, it would bode well for our relationship.

Never too late! I’m interested to learn about it and if I ever am in Arizona on 14th February, I will be sure to celebrate extra loudly 🙂
