How Was Your Weekend?

Mine was spent getting chores done and failing to convince myself to go see Black Panther–I really want to see it, but going to the movies is such a pain in the ass. I’ll make it eventually, especially since the weather is supposed to warm up this week.

Even though I still didn’t get around to cleaning the bathroom, I got a lot done – ran errands, did 2 loads of laundry, exercised on Saturday AND Sunday, read more of my book, made progress on a freelance project, went into work (only for an hour, but still), and got a decent amount of sleep!

We are not closed for President’s Day, but I hope those of you that are off are having an excellent 3 day weekend! No sarcasmo 🙂

My landlady finally came to replace the lightbulbs in my kitchen and bathroom (they’re too high up to reach without a ladder) and since she was coming over I cleaned a bunch. I also saw Black Panther and it was awesome. Shuri is my new favorite Marvel character.

I also want to see Black Panther! But I want to see it at an old-person time (i.e. my time) when it’s not so crowded.

I also can’t stop watching the gifs in this list of 25 Dog Tweets

Friends of mine from NJ visited. They are getting married this summer and asked me to officiate. I told them months ago I didn’t want to and they said “Can we ask again closer to it?” I said you can ask but I still won’t want to. So they asked again anyway and now I feel like I have to. Like, they are both lifelong friends, so… man. I just want to go to the wedding and have fun, not go and have a job. (They dated in high school, broke up, married other people for 15+ years, and now are back together. That’s an interesting origin story, at least!)

In nonfriend news, yesterday, a guy was beaten up by two goons in the hallway of my building. Right outside my personal door. This guy does not live here, but he’s always around — let’s respect his privacy by referring to him simply as Mr. Heroin Dealer — and he’s around mainly because his ex-gf lives here and he will not leave her the hell alone. Anyway, he had a beat-down coming, I am sure, but it is troubling that he got it right outside my door. What’s funny is that right before he walked in and got clobbered, I headed out to the farmers market, and as I passed the goons who were waiting to jump Mr. Heroin (though I did not know that was what they were up to) I thought, nervously, “Wow. Those are legit goons. Like from a movie where goons clobber a guy.”

I got back five minutes after the clobbering and I eavesdropped for two hours on the police questioning, and now I feel like I could write an Elmore Leonard book.

Do you really have to say yes to your friends? Sounds like kind of a drag if you’re not into it. But you’ll be done before the partying starts, right?

That goon-beating-up thing is scary! I had to look up Elmore Leonard. He wrote a lot of stuff, including some really good screenplays.

He did! A good starting point for anyone curious is the book Get Shorty. And he launched Justified, which is a great show.

On Saturday afternoon I went to a friend’s afternoon birthday party and hung out with the cutest baby for a few hours. Her parents are good friends with my good friends, so we see each other socially, but we aren’t in direct contact. But for some reason the mom said she really wanted the baby to like me and then I was like, yeah I want the baby to like me, too! Saturday night I saw former Monster Steph and hotspur even though he didn’t mention it but I guess he had more dramatic events to cover.

Sunday is a void. I know I did laundry and talked to my parents. I watched two Keanu movies and some M*A*S*H. That doesn’t seem like 24 hours worth of stuff but, oh well. Today I went into the office for a SEVEN HOUR brainstorming session about my organization’s five-year plan but that means I get another vacation day to use whenever so that’s good.

Oh! I have a full-on nemesis at the gym right now but the story isn’t that interesting so I’ll just say this woman is being totally obnoxious to me and hope that you guys take my side out of loyalty.

    • gnidrah says:

Oh you KNOW I love a gym nemesis. Totally on your side.

I was actively trying to not let gym people bother me, but then this woman moved all my equipment without asking (had she asked I actually would’ve been OK with it) so I’m back!

My weekend was okay. Saturday night we went out to celebrate my birthday and valentine’s and had a very delicious steak and other food. Otherwise it was fine but also sort of tough. I’m in kind of a rut with work and how tough my kids are these days and overall I feel very out of sorts and like nothing I do matters and I’m just killing time until things get better. Maybe that’s true, it just feels crappy.

    • gnidrah says:

I hope that things do improve. I am in a similar rut (except mine’s with job-hunting) and the treading water feeling is a strong one. Each day I’m trying to do one little thing that’s for me, and isn’t connected to work (or lack thereof) and eventually I/we’ll get through this bad spot.

      • collin0truckasaurus says:

Thank you…that’s a really good idea. I think just finding things to focus on other than “this sucks right now” would be really helpful.

My weekends are writing writing writing (I’m writing a dissertation but maybe I will finish it soon!). I just saw this article from our Kelly and I had to stop reading it at my desk because I was afraid I’d laugh out loud. You know the phrase “beats a sharp stick in the eye”? Well, I went for a walk in the woods Sunday and literally got a sharp stick in the eye. A circle of blood formed in the white part and I’ve been watching it slowly move. It doesn’t hurt, so I’m hoping it’s just like a bruise on my eye. But otherwise, it was a relaxing weekend.

    I’m a genius.
