So, How Was Your Day?

I have nothing to report! I’ve just been working and eating and going to bed this week. Maybe I’ll do something interesting once March ends and this so-called “Spring” stops being a LIE.

I feel harried because I’m going on vacation starting tomorrow night. There’s a lot to do before then, so I’m not fully excited yet. Mainly I am stressed that I don’t speak the language,* am going to experience humidity, and have to do laundry. What key item will I forget to pack? Time will tell. But, in theory, hooray! I will be in Hong Kong for two weeks. So, during that time, if you see me go light to zero on commenting, it does not mean I have abandoned my post here. I shall return, is the plan, with memories of noodles and the Big Buddha.

*I can say “thank you” and “don’t understand,” but it is 60% likely I will blank even on these in a pressure situation, such as trying to say them.

This is so exciting! I have my eye on HK for later this year so please share every detail of your adventure. My one packing tip is to throw a Tide pod into your luggage because usually it’s easy to find a laundromat but they charge an arm and a leg for detergent just like airports overcharge for food. I personally have not had success with hand washing clothes while traveling but maybe my heart just wasn’t really in it.

I travel with quick-dry pants I usually wash in the hotel sink, so that’s a help. But also it has been alleged there is a laundromat in the hotel, so I am packing my own personal thing of woolite for a mid-trip machine wash of all items.

Handwashing items is a hassle. You get in late, full of food and sunburnt, and you’re expected to spend 40 minutes dunking your pants and rolling them in a towel. That stinks while underway, but in the morning I feel like I’ve earned a Travel Merit Badge, so there’s an emotional payoff.

I have a family member who brings a bunch of old socks and underwear on long trips, and then throws out the items after he wears them. That wouldn’t work for pants or shirts, but if you have any clothes that you were going to get rid of anyway, now is the time to wear those!

Have a fun and safe trip!

How great! I’ve never been there. I guess I assumed there’d still be a decent amount of English spoken there, but I don’t know.

We do, of course, expect a full report.

My landlady texted me last night to ask if she could show my apartment this morning and I was like “Uhh, if you’re ok with it being a mess then sure” so instead of finishing the next Tournament of Hotties post I had to do at least SOME cleaning and then I fell asleep. The post is almost done, I just have to add the pictures so I promise it will be up tomorrow!

It’s raining pretty hard in LA. I want to go to Costco to ask about their dental insurance plan but this rain is a big deterrent to leaving the house. Do you guys have dental insurance? Has anyone found a PPO plan with a cap over $1,500 annually? Insurance shopping is so hard, why haven’t we (the US) figured this out yet?

I’m really glad that it’s now officially Spring, and I love the extra hour of sunshine, but it’s still really cold. And it’s supposed to snow on Saturday! NO MORE WINTER PLEASE!

Some of you may recall that I’ve been having some issues with my boss which came to a head recently where I decided that for real I’m definitely not working for him anymore. I have a meeting Friday to discuss with our EVP what that might mean for me and whether there’s some way I can still stay in the dept. but not reporting to this guy. Or working with him. Or being around him ever.
So my day has been fine because any amount of dealing with him currently reminds me that this won’t be the case forever!
Also this morning I ordered new glasses and they’re going to look really great!

We got our first real snow day in a very long time! Just enough snow to make a snowman, which we did to make it official. And two-hour delay this morning so I took the option for unscheduled telework (which I’m doing now, don’t tell anyone I’m here!). Working from home makes me look at everything in the house for extended periods, which makes me want to fill up boxes to get rid of at least half of it. How do Americans accumulate so much junk?
