Spooktober Is Here!

Welcome to Spooktober! I don’t actually care about Halloween costumes or scary stuff but I do love this dancing pumpkin man and the strange story behind his existence. I also like hearing about your plans for costumes and scary happenings! Do you dress up for Halloween? What will you be this year?

I always plan to read a scary book or two for this, our best month. The past 3 years I picked Turn of the Screw. I never got to it. So this year I am changing things up by picking The Devil Rides Out. It is alleged to be a work of evil and bananas.

Halloween weekend a friend of mine is having his birthday party at a rum distillery. I intend to wear as costume a fake mustache. I live near an excellent fake mustache shop. I’ll walk down for a fitting maybe this week.

An entire shop of fake mustaches???

I need to hear more about fake mustache shops.

I once went to a Halloween party, and my “costume” was simply wearing fake sideburns.

I am also curious to know if there is an entire store of fake mustaches. Do they also sell sideburns?

They sell many things but their fake facial hair counter is extensive. They can match my hair pretty much exactly, and the things attach nicely with spirit gum. So, obviously, occasionally I purchase a mustache. I happened to be wearing one the day I met Ray Bradbury, so my photo with him is me wearing one so big that the security guy called it a “soupstrainer” and asked how many months it took to grow.

Every year my sister-brother has a goth Halloween party. We wear black clothes and gothy makeup with heavy eyeliner, big-ass black boots, that kind of thing. You can tell who the actual goth is, because she shows up with a simple black cape she made herself.

Usually I like to watch Alien. A spooky atmospheric novel I enjoy is Sarah Water’s Affinity. It’s set in the age of Victorian spiritualism.
